[40d] look pretty fire
« on: October 31, 2008, 03:23:03 pm »

I just watched 2 of my elite marks dwarfs stand still and let a forest fire engulf them. there was a magma man running loose and guessing what would happen i immediately forbid anyone from going outside. shortly after i did that i noticed that 2 of my marksdwarfs decided they would like to watch the forest burn. they refused to move i even tried moving there station point. so i tried turning off no ones allowed outside and they immediately came running out of the fire toward my fortress. thankfully i was able to dump them in the chasm when they crossed the bridge or my fortress would have lit up

Dwarves do not register fire. never have. It's one of those things that makes the game so fun. especially when they decide they need to rest in your densely packed barracks.

the bug was not the fact that they didn't run from fire it was the fact that they stayed outside when i ordered them inside, and that they refused to move when is changed there station point  while the
"no one allowed outside" option was on

Isn't this a bug, then?

I'm not exactly sure. it seems to only apply to at least elite levels, so it might be intended.

The bug you're experiencing has to do with the way dwarves handle the "dwarves stay inside" command.  ANY dwarf (not just champions) exhibits strange behavior (most often freezing in place) if he's already outside when you turn on "dwarves stay inside".  This happens to my lumberjacks and fisherdwarves just about every time a goblin ambush pops up, to the point that I don't even bother using it anymore because it causes so many problems.

It's my opinion that that option causes pathfinding problems because the dwarf's thought processes go something like, "Okay, I'm not allowed to be outside anymore, but no matter which way I go to get inside, I have to cross  outside spaces, and I can't do that!"  So they dither in place until the flames or goblins or whatever get them.

Really? i have no such problems. though i hear that you need inside meeting areas or you will get screwy behavior, and i'd bet on duty military troops have similar problems.

Meeting places would help. Having no outdoor meeting places, and some indoor meeting places would be a good start. Also, make sure you tear down your starter wagon, it counts as a meeting place.

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

And remains a meeting place until you designate your first own meeting place.
