Do Catapults actually shoot up?
« on: October 22, 2008, 01:32:10 am »

Well do they? Or can I operate a catapult in one z-level with a roof right above? The shot won't crash through my ceiling, will it?

Catapults won't work across z-levels, so no. Also they can shoot through any number of fortifications.

Wait wait wait. Catapults don't work across Z-levels at all? So they can't shoot at targets a Z-level below the one they are on?

Nope. Don't put them on towers.

The good news is that because of this and the fortification unimpediment you can turn the ground floor of your fortification into a catapult park quite easily with little risk of accident.

Bah, there goes that plan; what a disappointment. At least marksdwarves shoot through z-levels, right? I mistakenly assumed all projectiles would....

Does this mean ballistas don't shoot across Z-levels either?

Ballistae - in a slightly more sensible fashion - do not fire across Z-levels.

Catapults, though? It's looking to be fixed.

Sorry to bring a dead thread back to life, but what happens to the projectiles after they're shot if they don't cross z-levels?

catapulted rocks and ballista arrows are destroyed if they do not drop at least 1 z level.

Also, they are useless if they do drop 1 z level, so you have your choice: unlimited ammo or useful ammo

Ha! Not quite so, my friend!

Observe:

Code: [Select]
CF.........................................._W
CF.........................................._W
CF.........................................._W

Catapults (C) shoot through the fortifications (F), travel across the terrain (.) and hit the walls (W), smashing stuff on the way. Upon hitting the walls, they fall down the channels in front of them (_), thus saving the rock.

Single metal bolts are considered to be a full stack when smelted. Use magma and you can create metal for free
