No Civilizations in a Desert
« on: November 03, 2008, 02:40:23 pm »

Hello,

I picked a desert location for my most recent fort next to a river and magma pipe, which was something I've been hunting for quite some time. Unfortunately it wasn't a haunted biome, but it was close enough. I brought 100 units of tower-cap wood upon embarking, considering the terrain, but now a year in have I noticed that a caravan didn't come, nor does any civilizations show on my Civilizations screen.

It seems at this point I'll eventually run out of wood, and will never be able to import anything, considering no civilization can reach me somehow. I'm not on an island, though my area is surrounded by mountains and an ocean.

The only upside is that I don't get any migrants.

Is there any way to salvage my location or am I forever doomed to isolation without wood or trade?

The screen only updates when you actually see a civ... Anyhow, I would imagine that you may well be idolated forever, but that being a bad thing is entirely a matter of opinion...

Civs usually dont appear on the civ screen until you've made contact with them, except for the dwarves. And in any case, the dwarves always come to trade, no matter what. Doesnt matter if you're on an island surrounded by an ocean of magma, water, and carp.

If that's the case I wonder why a caravan didn't show up during the fall. I know I didn't really have much of anything produced, but my value was decent with the amount of obsidian blocks I had made for my walls.

The only tweak I've done to the system was turn off weather and set my population cap to 7, for the time being. Would that have prevented a caravan from visiting me?

I've also not had dwarvern caravans show up on several of my worlds and locations.  Even with the mountain home being just over the next hill.  Second year, 3 legendary engravers, no deaths, and still no dwarves showing up.

200 pop cap and weather as well, so it isn't an issue with those.  I just don't get it.

Quite the oddity this is. I've hit my second winter now with the same results: no caravan, no civilizations, no immigrants. The latter I assume is due to the no civilizations and my population cap.

I decided to stick it out for now, slowly building up my fortress and starting on glass production. This is slowed by my lack of bags, but the newborn animals will provide a steady, albeit painfully slow, supply of leather for the bags.

The dwarven civ is in all likelihood dead and the rest can't reach you

Should check this stuff before you embark. Regen the world with a different history seed after checking what killed them. Probably the elves, they aren't the hippies we all used to hate anymore
