Rome total war: Barbarian invasion
« on: March 23, 2009, 04:46:18 am »

We love Total war, or at least, a lot of us do. Come on in, come one, come all! (for rome total war, cause I can't run empire and regardless, there's a thread about that.)

So, I was playing as the Saxons, (Could have been subliminal messaging, the feature in all the box art and gameplay movies) and I have to say, I really liked them. For one, the simplicity. Once you advance far enough, you can get either crazy badass axe dudes or sensible badass professional swordsmen who can kick any of Rome's infantry one on one (Though they take heavy casualties). But I noticed something.

After knocking on Rome's door, knocking it down, trashing their place and going through their mail, I noticed something odd. They had access to the best siege facilities money can buy, so why can't the Saxons get any siege weapons? I know they're barbarians but I took this place with several solid steel siege towers (though to be honest the defenders were so pitiful I didn't need them) and I'm starting to wonder if I'm compensating for something. It's depressing.

Why can't you <any plausible thing> in the RTW:BI campaign?

Because the campaign aspect of RTW is shallow and BI barely improved upon that.

Gah, I just got Medieval ii and can't get past the idiotic copy protection, i mean, if it gave you any information at all about what it's problem was it might... ... ... ...

Heh, I like phalanxes, I once charged elephants into the front of a phalanx, just to see what would happen... happy hoplites! I guess that the ultimate charge is no match for the ultimate formation. They just need to make it so that phalanxes can't get flanked, then it would be the perfect game, hmm, maybe give them laser vision too!

Some mods help fix the campaign mode to be more fun/challenging/make the AI be less pathetic.

Just a question. How is the AI in this game? I guess it must be horrible, just like in the other TW games.  :-X

I think BI was the high water mark for AI in the TW series.  Same idiocy on the campaign level, and doesn't know when to quit on the tactical level.  But with roughly even numbers, the AI comports itself somewhat decently for a while.  But it's very predictable and easy to manipulate after a while.

Maybe you can put two phalanxes back-to-back?

Try Europa Barbarorum. Its a mod for R:TM  that removes the bullshit and places historically data in its place. It play since before the First Punic War and Rome isn't destined to win at all. You might as well conquer as the Gaul or Carthage.

I recommend that mod too. If you're playing Medieval 2, you might also want to check out the Ultimate AI mod.

I have all the total war games and their expansions except the first and the last.  I'm going to wait for the gold edition of Empire because I just don't feel comfortable getting it now with what I've heard about the pre-order crap or whatever.  I might as well get the best package. :P

I have Medieval II. Is this ultimate ai mod that good? I might give it a try.

Thanks for the info.  :)

BI is a mostly shallow attempt at toning down the romans a bit from the original. Play RTR(free mod) instead.

RTR feels like vanilla to me after playing EB.
