From "Angroshs Kinder" Das schwarze Auge Zwergenhandbuch - (Angrosh Children, the dark eye, german pen&paper, dwarven handbook):
"Elves!? Their men dont wear beards, and their women bathe nacked to lure you into the water and drown you. Thank Angrosh they are as ugly as the day and all big and skinny."

And while at it...

Objects marked for melting should count as forbidden for any other task. I.e so the Dwarves won't pick up and use melt-designated armor or wepon.

Agreed, this would be a great option along with auto-fish-cleaning.

I *think* they might already do this, but if they're already wearing an item when it gets designated for melt, they won't drop it.

No, unfortunately, they will pick up melt designated stuff as of now.
I ended up in fort where i couldn't find any good ore. Buying iron/steel stuff from caravans a lot to melt it, so i had this happen more than once.
