Sorry to Necro this but I've been encountering the same problem, I eventually discovered it was the creatures beneath the floor (natural) interrupting my guys. It really put a hamper on my ability to collapse the tunnel on them blocking off the underground river. So should I submit the save?

Yeah, I can probably use another save for this.  I'll need the region folder in some kind of zip/rar/7z, and any new objects that were added to the raw folder.  If it's less than 20 megs, you can send it to toadyone@bay12games.com.  You can also try The Dwarf Fortress File Depot which has a special section for bugged saves.  Thanks for your help.

Could this be some sort of proximity check, i.e. similar to a detection caused by a dwarf physically running into a hidden creature?

I don't think that'll be it.  All of the relevant code depends on having a target already or having a line to a new target.  They could be getting a target in some weird way, but I can't think of anything off the top of my head.  It'll be easy enough to fix when I take a look at a save, probably, as long as it doesn't just interrupt once, in which case the save may or may not be useful.
