[40d] Several workshops have become unusable
« on: October 17, 2008, 01:19:41 am »

Several of my workshops have stopped responding to all related activities. If I queue jobs, they're never performed, nor are they canceled. Nobody takes the job, no matter how many people have the skills and labor preferences for it. I can't even remove the workshops. However, if I build new workshops of the same type, they work fine.

Here is the fortress and init.txt file: http://www.adammil.net/region1.zip

The workshops are the still and the kitchen, which should be visible when the fortress is loaded. They are on Z-level -3 and are gypsum (yellow) walled rooms without doors, just southwest of the stairs. They are slated for removal, but will never be removed. Feel free to "stop removal" and queue a job. The job will never be taken.

Note the still and kitchen I built in the hallway outside. They work fine...

I think I have other broken workshops, too. So frustrating. :-(

The materials that the workshops are made out of may have been forbidden.  Press t and cursor over your workshops, any objects with a [ B ] next to them are part of the workshops, and if they're forbidden, then the workshop is forbidden, and you'll end up with a situation like you describe.

Edit: yeah, I just downloaded it and checked it, and that's the problem, your farmer, tanner, bowyer, and carpenter workshops are the same way, and your trade depot.  Basically, anything you made out of gypsum, looks like you forbid all the gypsum, and as an annoying side effect, anything made out of that got forbid as well.

Well, that's not very intuitive...

I don't think I explicitly forbade any type of stone, but I might have dumped a few pieces in a garbage pile. Would that do it? (I may also have forbade them by accident.)

But thanks so much! My dwarves will have ale again! And food and crossbows...

Yeah, something like that might have caused it, stuff that's set to dump gets forbidden after it's been dumped.  Maybe if you set something to build, and then set the material that was going to be used to build it to be dumped.  Then some dwarf could pick it up, dump it, making it forbidden, and then the building dwarf comes along, grabs the piece of material selected to be used (now forbidden) and builds with it.  Or at least that's as close as I can see to it happening if you didn't forbid it through the stocks menu, or forbid an area with a designation.  I've ended up with pieces in buildings that still have the dump mark on them.

I know this has been posted and answered many, many times before.
How is it that people who don't have the sense to see if anybody else had the same problem as them before they go post about it manage to get their own domain?
^Wow.  Run-on sentence much.
(I hope you realize the above [except for the very first sentence] is entirely in humor and should be treated as such)
But in any case, yes, dumping the items that are going to be used to build something isn't a good idea.
Moving stone at all is useless anyway.  Your dwarves don't care whether the hall is perfectly clear or completely filled with boulders.  They'll cross it at the same speed.
Items littering the ground do absolutely nothing against ANYTHING.  You're really best off leaving them alone.

I did search, but didn't find an answer. What do you suggest I should have searched for? Also, maybe it being asked many, many times indicates that it's really a problem that should be fixed! :-P

It's the aesthetic value. :-)

You know there's a Hide feature right?
(Though buildings built with hidden stone are themselves hidden, but...at least they do work)
