Side jobs
« on: October 18, 2008, 08:24:30 am »

I often find myself becoming frustrated that dwarves walk right past jobs they could have done with little to no extra effort.

For example, say a farmer dwarf is on his way back from the farm plot to get another seed to plant from the food stockpile. He walks right past the ripe plump helmet waiting to be taken back to the stockpile, then past a seed lying on the ground that he finds on his way to the food stockpile. On his way back, he walks past a lever that needs to be pressed.

As it is, all up these jobs will take 4-5 times as many dwarf-hours to be done in seperate trips or by different dwarves than it would have taken that single dwarf to do on his way to and from the food stockpile.

So, why not have dwarves pick up jobs by proximity? If a there is a job to be started near to a dwarf's current path, and the job's ending point is close to somewhere else on the current path, have the dwarf take that job.

May your fortresses be ever more efficient!
