So this thread got me thinking about designs I'm going to use for me new fortress. I fiddle a bit, find something that I think is going to work and, just as I finish it, I realize what it is.
Swastikas.
Every time I try and do this thing I always get swastikas. Why'd the Nazis have to go and ruin such a perfectly useful shape for the Western world (I hear that a lot of places, where the similar Buddhist symbol were used pre-WWII don't care as much)?
There are more jokes that I can make, but a lot of them make me sound so incredibly insensitive that I'm not going to risk it. :P

I completely agree.  Like it or not, even an accidental swastika stands out in a fortress design and the whole Nazi thing kicks in.  :(

I've recently switched to using Herrbdogs 16x16 character set for playing, but can't convince the game to export files properly in it, so I'm having to export in the default tileset.  I suspect Windows Aero is the culprit.  Anyway, it's much easier to design things in squares than in the rectangular tiles.

Not content with mere symmetry, my forts are also laid out in accordance with "sacred" numerology and geometry  ;D. Squared circles, designs based on 3, 5, and 7, and my 3x3 central staircase is whenever possible built around the tile in the exact center of the map.

 I wonder...

 Fortress based around curvilinear shapes. That would be fascinating. Imagine random rounded shapes overlapping eachother.

 Must try, despite any and all problems it has...

My fortress is scale invariant. I'm not content with the more mundane symmetries.

I usually need it to be symmetrical, functional, and pretty. I have abandoned more than one fort due to unexpected olivine or mudstone.

What?  I'd love to have olivine in my current fort.  Dark green is a nice color to have.

After I discovered the Shift key + Direction Arrow moves the cursor exactly ten spaces, all my forts are built w/a grid of 11x11 halls containing 9x9 blocks w/7x7 interiors (or 4 3x3 workshops w/separating walls.)  It makes it really easy to do big layouts fast and make sure everything lines up on Z levels.  I put up/down stairs and a small stockpile of booze at each intersection. When I mine for minerals, i use the same pattern in case i want to expand the fort.  Even though the hallways are only one tile wide, there are so many routes to take there are never any traffic jams.  Super efficient.  The problems are if you flood the place, you're basically effed, and if enemies get inside they're hard to contain.  After some elves got loose, I've started putting one stone block trap in every hall-segment and using more hatches. 

Its like the Borg Cube.  In fact I was thinking of shaving off the unnecessary parts of my mountain and adding an outer shell made from iron blocks and green glass.

My last two forts (Squashshoot and Pagebend at map archive) are made of small clusters with a regular design in mind. And I like it so much, that this will be the feature of every one of my future forts. Not only it is eye pleasing, it also is effective!
