Late-game challenges?
« on: October 09, 2008, 08:28:20 am »

So, I've got a pretty mature fortress, and have more or less run out of challenges.  I, ah, eliminated any challenges related to mining out a fairly hefty seam of adamantine, got the king, and have actually stopped being besieged by goblins -- I had a couple huge sieges (though no trolls, oddly) and then suddenly nothing but the occasional ambush when the caravans come through.  The only thing I can think of is that I killed a couple of their named leaders in one of the later sieges.

I've never been one for giant constructions, and I'm not a huge fan of adventure mode.  Any suggestions for challenges, or would it be better to start a new fortress at this point?  (I thought about pissing off the elves to see if they siege, but I gathered from another thread that they don't do that in the current version)

In the current version of dwarf fortress, the main challenges are in the establishment of a good fortress, instead of the actual running. I mean, sure, eventually given enough time, a random bolt of lightning will strike and everything in your fortress will probably explode in a giant tantrum spiral. But since that may take an eternity, and you sound bored in the meantime, it sounds like what you need to do is start a new fortress, perhaps with a few voluntary challenges or in a stupidly hard location.

As to what to do with your current fortress, you could choose to save it and start a new world/abandon, or you could try and make it go out in a blaze of glory in a tantrum spiral. For example, you could try pretending that your dwarves were suddenly into the whole elf pacifist thing(before the elves changed in the army arc) and now their military / traps are deactivated.

That makes sense.  I was just reading the "how do I destroy my fortress?" thread, which sounded pretty entertaining :)

You could also toy with the 'better goblin mod',  I believe it is called.
That could turn those ambushes you still have into trouble..

Dwarven Olympics!  Devise a series of "games" for your peasants to participate in which result in the losers perishing.  A very simple example:  the 12 tile dash.  Grab two or more peasants, and place them each alone on an platform held up be supports.  Make a 12 tile long path to a lever which will remove the supports from their opponent(s)'s platform, designate "pull" at the same time- and voila!  Extreme sports!

You could arrange a whole bunch of games like that.

Recruit hammer dwarves, and have them spar on aerial platforms.

Make several hundred party-able rooms, and watch as your fortress eventually starves to death.

How about catching as many of the goblins as possible in cage traps. Place all of the cages around the map connected to one lever and then release them all at once. If you have the patience to catch eight or nine sieges worth of goblins then I am sure that this will be a good challenge. Make sure to remove all traps and then let your military have a go in a fight scene rival to that of LOTR.

Mine.

Everything.

Anything that's not needed as a wall gets dug out. I don't care if there's nothing left but rock, rock still has some value! Squeeze every last drop of resources from the land.

And when you run out of things to dig...
That's when you set up the Cave In The Entire Fortress At Once lever.
