Food management
« on: October 06, 2008, 02:55:08 pm »

due to dwarves insisting on eating all my unprepared food first (sadly the dining room with the prepared food is next to the apartments while they all work in the same complex as the stores)  I'm considering the option of taking my cook, and a hauler, locking them into my food stores with an apartment, and pumps for slow days, sparing armour/weapons for even slower days.  I'll dump, pit, and/or airlock in the raw foodstuffs (pit excess and cattle and the like, dump corpses that need butchering, airlock in the farm produce that I don't know when will finish).  Once those are in, only these 2 dwarves can snack on it, and once I process meals and booze, I can dump them into my dining room stockpiles or forbid them for trade or something.

I was wondering if anyone ever went through something this drastic for their food supplies, or am I just being paranoid?

I've considered drop-tier methods like this for - among other things - driving large quantities of dwar finsane to produce Fell moods, but as of right now my fortress got a Legendary bone carver by way of a Fey mood, so the point is somewhat moot...

That said, it'd certainly work if you don't mind the micromanagement.

Nah, don't mind the micromanagement.  I'll do things like dump all my trade goods dirrectly on top of the trade center (going to have to make it just off to the side to fit a food stockpile in there)  And not let my dwarves idle for more than 5 seconds before my second wave of immigrants.
