A tower fortress.
« on: October 06, 2008, 06:23:11 pm »

So I got the idea from another thread: An idea of a bunch of connected fortresses, only having one entrance (an entrance tower).
Now, I have a quick question: Can bridges function as supports for floors? They can work as supports for other bridges from what I've seen...

They can not work as supports for floors. Pretty sure they can't act supports for other bridges either, although don't quote me on that.

I like your idea, I had a similar one a while back. I think your towers would look just as cool if you had 1x1 pillars many z-levels high acting as support pillars for your bridges, you could make them work like a 'Y' at the top to support a larger area while keeping the phalic shape largely intact :D

They're working as supports for eachother, and now my retracting bridge is working to support my floor as well. Scratch that, the floor collapsed. Thats ok, I have a work around for the problem.

Still, wide arches supporting bridges between massive columns would be neat. Now make every tower wagon accessible from the bottom to the top, and you have sweetness. You would not even have to make walls around your fortress, as the tower walls contain everything.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Bridges don't actually require support from what I've seen.
Which would explain why they support each other but not floors.

Floors (and walls) can only be supported by floors, walls, and supports.

*Retractable* bridges can be supported by the above, and also by other bridges (raised bridges require something to anchor onto).  But retractable bridges cannot be entirely unsupported -- if you have bridge A being the only support for bridge B, and you retract bridge A, bridge B will collapse.

However, *retracted* bridges seem to need no support: you can retract bridge B, then retract bridge A, and then at some point in the future, expand bridge A, and then bridge B, and it'll all be fine, as long as it's done in that order.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

for sieges I'd say make a spiral path up the outside of the tower, and put a couple hammer traps near the top.  I'm not sure if they work that way, but smacking goblins off the tower would be neat.
