A stairs question I can't find an answer to...
« on: October 03, 2008, 12:00:08 pm »

Okay, I've looked in the wiki and done a forum search, but I can't see any specific answer to this one. Apologies if I missed it somehow, but its only a quick question anyway.

If you are digging Up/Down stairs (or just down ones I guess) and the 'down' part discovers an open space below (down through a magma pipe plug, over an underground river, etc), is that down staircase now effectively acting as an open space and could flying creatures come up through it? I guess the same question also applies to pressurised water coming up from below.

Not that its really much of a problem to floor back over if it could let creatures in, but it was just a thought that came to mind.

I believe so, mostly because I recall incidents where water flooded a lower level that had no up stair when it flowed over a down stair to the lower level.  Flying creatures and such probably can get through as well, though I'm not so sure on that.

I fully endorse the idea of mountain goats that hunt man.

Yes, up/down staircases, and down staircases for that matter, remove the floor from the tile that they're on.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.
