By Armok, what a group!
« on: October 05, 2008, 01:43:48 am »

I've officially lost my first fortress.  It was still in its first year, with only the original 7 dwarves, when I accidentally breached the HFS.

This is also the first time that I've seen the HFS other than on the embark screen.

Wow.

I'm now trying to reclaim the fortress, and the Reclaim screen has provided me with 49 dwarves to start with.  Holy (insert expletive here).

This is my first attempt at a reclamation, so wish me luck.  ;D

EDIT:  There are demons.  Everywhere.

I've never managed to coordinate combat effectively, and this isn't the way to learn.

Sadly, this fortress must be left to rot, despite its riches.

Anyway..............why does the wiki say that you can wall off the pits to contain the demons when the bloody things smash down the walls I build to contain them?  That's why I lost my original group - I walled it all off, but the demons just smashed the walls down and killed my dwarves anyway.  D:

How did you wall it off? Constructed walls (uild->[c]onstruction->[w]all) are indestructible, even if you make them out of wood. Doors, floodgates and supports, on the other hand, can be knocked down by building destroyer units such as demons.

You probably left them a spot they could squeeze through diagonally

Or they flew around

Actually, a while back, someone mentioned that an Ettin actually managed to smash down a wall. The constructed variety.

Can't remember what version that was, though...

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

If you really want the HFS, just keep reclaiming....you have an infinite supply of dwarves after all.

I'm not sure if the pits spawn more demons later though.

A lot of my reclaims net me about 70 dwarves, and I don't know why. It gets creepy when you know there's a massive threat on the map but you don't know what it is.

I once reclaimed somewhere that had neither a chasm, HFS, rivers, magma, etc. and I had +70 dwarves.
Turned out there were about 75 GCS. After we cleared out the gobbos I set everyone to civilian duties so that we could get some food and booze before we ran out of what we brought.
We lost the wood cutters first, then the hunters, then everyone else went to military duty only to die miserably.

Everything respawns when you try again, regardless of whether it was dead

Yeah.

As soon as my wall was built (granite), I got a message:

Wall Toppled

The wall vanished, then a demon zoomed out of the pits and slaughtered the poor dwarf who had just finished building the wall.

I sent in the other six as recruits, one of them the woodcutter with an axe, the other 5 with their picks.  They managed to kill the demon leader-dude before some of his lackeys (frog-demons) swarmed out and tore them to pieces. All in late winter of the fortress's first year.

I still don't know why I didn't get any immigrants after the dwarven caravan left.

:P  Didn't breach the HFS until late winter, the immigrants should have shown up a while before that.  I was digging around so deep because I was bored, waiting for slaves immigrants to arrive.

As Kagus just so helpfully hinted at, the norm is getting immigrants in spring of the second year. (usually a crapflood thereof, too). It's possible, but not overly likely, to get immigrants before then. Or at the least, it used to be, as I know my first fort basically imploded thanks to getting an additional 8 dwarves in my first autumn. Well, that and my freaking out about not being ready for them.

The goblin fortress on the other side of the map probably helped, too. Damn me not knowing what the pi symbol meant.
