Smelted metal... gone!

I melted down a spare battle axe and didn't get any metal from it.

Probably not a bug.  You only get 1/3 of the metal back.  Weapons take 1 bar, so you've got 1/3 of a bar.  Fractions of bars stay in the smelter (invisibly) until you've got enough for a full bar.
