I need help with several things... I'm new...
« on: October 02, 2008, 02:41:57 pm »

I just started playing yesterday and have built a small fortress under ground, I want to make a stockpile for wood there near the Carpenters workshop but there are rocks there and it blocks parts of it how do I make someone pick up the rocks?
And how do I populate other dwarfs?
How do I make them go down stairs and live there?
How do I make someone work? I have a workplace but none works there :(.
WHY WON'T ANYONE MAKE THE FARM!? I HAVE A STINKIN FARM PLOT SET UP!!!
More questions to come when I play more!
Thanks to whoever answers these! Either way I ma having fun! :D

If you loo(k) at items, you can designate them for (d)umping.  Do that with the stones you want moved, and also designate a (z)one for garbage.  Dwarves will dump the stones into the garbage zone, and clear your pile.

More dwarves come over time, but you have to have successful caravans (i.e. trade with them and let them survive to leave the map) and an expanding net wealth.

Quote wall time:

And how do I populate other dwarfs?

They do this by themselves, just check their relationships screen once in a while for 'Lovers'. Its more likely that you'll get a migrant family joining you than one of your original seven getting together

How do I make them go down stairs and live there?

They go down stairs by their own accord, I think it is possible to make them live down there (By issuing the 'Dwarves stay inside' command) but it usually helps to mine out soom rooms and build a few beds to put down there, also put some workshops down there so they won't have much of a reason to leave

How do I make someone work? I have a workplace but none works there :(.

Depends on the workplace, if you have something like a masonry then your starting seven will likely not have masonry on their mind, the easy way to get them to work is to press 'V' and then go to the 'labor' (by pressing 'p' then 'l') screen of the nearest dwarf, then scroll down to where it says 'masonry' and press enter, now they should be trying to do mason's jobs

This applies to everything

WHY WON'T ANYONE MAKE THE FARM!? I HAVE A STINKIN FARM PLOT SET UP!!!

It takes time, the dwarves get easily distracted when it comes to farms (I find it that way, at least). Make sure you press 'q' then position the cursor over a farm plot, then choose the plant you want (You may also need to set one of your starting seven to be a farmer using the above method)

Good ;D hope I helped

For workshops and farms, you need to do two things to use them:

1) Enable the appropriate labor for at least one of your dwarves (e.g. "Farming (fields)" for farming, or "Masonry" for mason workshops)
2) Queue up work at the workshop/farm. For farms, this means selecting a crop to be grown at the farm.

Once you make a zone, if you mouse over it "garbage dump" will show up as one of the designations you can turn that zone into.

Uhmm z isn't zone (i) is and there is no garbage thing in (i)

You're right, 'z' is for status, and 'i' is for zone, but there is a garbage dump:

Press 'i'
Navigate to where you want your dump to be.  Press enter to designate one corner of the dump, and then move the cursor to where you want the other side to be and press enter again (same as with mining, etc).

A list of zone types appears.  Press 'g' and it becomes a garbage dump.  Press space to exit this menu.  Dwarves will now take things that have been marked for dumping here.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

I just started playing yesterday and have built a small fortress under ground, I want to make a stockpile for wood there near the Carpenters workshop but there are rocks there and it blocks parts of it how do I make someone pick up the rocks?

Dwarves won't pick anything up unless they have a job to do with it.  Either assign a task in a mason's workshop to use up the stone or designate a stone stockpile.

Since you're new, fun fact:  Food stockpiles are necessary to prevent decay.  Food will slowly rot when left to sit just any old place.  Raw meat will very slowly (over the course of 2 years or so) decay even in a stockpile, so be sure to cook any meat.

And how do I populate other dwarfs?

Dwarves will occasionally become lovers and have children periodically, but the primary means of population growth is immigration.  Fortress wealth and trade to the dwarven caravan (especially offerings) will increase immigration.  Dwarf deaths will hurt immigration.  Doing a lot of mining may also increase immigration.

How do I make them go down stairs and live there?

You need to designate a meeting zone.  Check the zones menu (press 'I').  Alternately, designated certain types of rooms will attract idle dwarves (dining halls, statue gardens, zoos, and barracks).

How do I make someone work? I have a workplace but none works there :(.

You need to enable the appropriate labor before a dwarf will use a given workshop.  If you want them to carve stone blocks and make stone furniture (in a mason's workshop), assign a dwarf to the masonry labor.  Press 'V', select a dwarf, then press 'P' then 'L'.  That'll bring you to the labor assignment screen.

WHY WON'T ANYONE MAKE THE FARM!? I HAVE A STINKIN FARM PLOT SET UP!!!

This is also a labor issue.  You need to assign a dwarf to Farming (Plot) or whatever it's called.  There's another farming labor called Farming (Workshop) or something to that effect.  That lets them process plants in a farmer's workshop.  You want the plot one enabled to make them build and tend a farm.
