Are humans supposed to be this wimpy?
« on: September 27, 2008, 11:43:36 pm »

OK, so summer comes around and just like last year, another human siege shows up! I was pumped. Two groups, one with a champion and one with a hammerlord.

I send out my military. The humans....scatter and run?! Wtf? There are more of them, they're on horseback...but they all run. Still....my dwarves, on foot, with their stubby little legs, manage to chase down and kill almost all the humans, and the remaining ones escape.

Net profit, I lost one marksdwarf (not sure how), got a macedwarf wounded, my swordmaster got two extra names, and a bunch of quick-recruited miners dogpiled and murdered the pikemaster. And I have lots of large iron stuff to melt down.

So why are humans such wimps? Is this supposed to happen? How can I make them fight harder?

[NOFEAR]

Actually, the [NOEMOTION] tag works too. Check out the Magma mans profile for those wonderful things. They will make humans charge straight to their deaths regardless of how many have been gored on spikes.

And thus did the dream of dwarven antigravity fade away, not with a massive explosion or a flood of magma, but with a whimper.

I'm going to be depressed all day now.

Hmmm...there's no happy medium? As in "Sensible and healthy fear of overwhelming odds, but doesn't run at the sight of five grubby dwarves when there's 20 guys with you? On horseback?"

I think this was actually a reported bug that was planned to be fixed. If I remember correctly it was because the horses were still using wild horse pathing, so they run away when you get near, and just happen to take their riders with them.

Yep. Here it is.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Ahhhhh. That's a big relief.

Till that gets fixed, how might I mod humans not to bring horses (seems like the easiest way to fix it)

That's actually really cool and accurate. The humans are just really crappy horse trainers who can't control their animals' natural instincts. ;D

Odd how "Experiment" in DF is often synonymous with "Raging inferno of death and dispair"

Also, I'm not sure if I'm more disturbed by the humans' cavalry bolting at the sight of a half dozen dwarves, or the fact that the dwarves are able to outrun and kill the cavalry. DWARVES. With SHORT LITTLE LEGS. There should be a speed token for creatures.

I agree. I modded one onto all the creatures I could think of that needed one (horses, gazelles, cheetahs) but it would be nice to have it automatically there. Wasn't there a creature quibbles thread somewhere a while back?
