well before it even gets to picking a mayor, you can influence who becomes the leader of your starting dwarves by adding a few points to some social skills such as consoler or pacifier etc.

my starting leader also happens to be my trade broker, and its usually the case that he becomes, and stays, mayor. most probably due to his social skills

"Urist claims to have a healthy appreciation for alcohol but on the 23rd of Felsite she was seen going to the river for a drink. How can we trust somebody who is regularly sober?

My name is Zon Wheelbucket, and I approve this message."

"zon wheelbucket claims that i was drinking water. However, during the latest goblin siege, he killed 9 dwarves because he was busy getting drunk instead of watching his post.  He also drank all of the beer, so we all had to drink from the river that week.  How can we trust a dwarf when he places his own drunkenness above everyone elses? Isn't that why we formed socities in the first place? to be drunk together?

I'm Urist, and I approve of this message. but not on zon wheelbucket. he sucks.

I let the person i want to be Mayor idle in between tasks. Sure, it's creepy having him attend parties made mostly up of children and animals, but having the same predictable mayor is nice, especially one who asks only for copper items in his mandates (while i have almost 500 copper ores sitting around).

Last year, Urist stated he would make sure there would be enough beer for several years to come. With such recklessly low supplies, we were sure to run out and fall into soberity. How can we trust a dwarf that cannot fulfill his promises?

Zon Wheelbucket is a veteran, seeing his comrades slaughtered on the field. The only way he left the field was if somebody dragged his injured body off.

A vote for Zon Wheelbucket is a vote for change. A vote for strength! A vote for dependability!

I'm Zon Wheelbucket, and I approve of this message.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Zon Wheelbucket claims to be a war hero. He claims to know what is true to a Dwarf's heart. But, is Zon really all there?

No one has seen Zon sparring for years. Why is that? A closer look into Zon's medical records show that he sustained a spinal injury, while sparring with a fresh recruit wielding a wooden spear. A wooden spear bought from Elves. Can you really trust a man who associates with anyone who associates with Elves?

A vote for Urist is a pull of the trade depot flooding lever.

I'm Urist McMayor, and I approve this message.

LOL at this entire page I love it

Anyway, I'll confirm that having friends does not get you to be mayor...or at least, not having friends is no barrier. My mayor position keeps getting juggled around between various no-count peasants, none of whom have any relationships beyond their nuclear family.

My worthless prat mayor mandated creation of three crystal glass items.  The mandate status turned yellow, then red, and I was busy making a suit of full plate so that whatever scapegoat he chose might survive the hammer.  And then, just before some poor fool had to take one for the team, the mayor was ousted and some other prat took over.  The mandate vanished.

An unstable government can have its uses.

While Zon Wheelbucket was protecting the fortress from the goblin menace, Urist was inside updating stockpile records. And yet Urist has called into question Zon Wheelbucket's militarty credentials. There's only one conclusion to draw from this: Urist hates veterans.

Paid for by the friends of Zon Wheelbucket.
