Gremlin Immigrant..?
« on: September 27, 2008, 10:57:02 pm »

With a custom race that I've modded in, that I've given the ability to use all creatures (good/evil) I just got an immigrant Gremlin(?!) hunter.  It says (Tame) at the end of her name, but I can access the preference screen fine, it list skills properly, and she has a personality & name.  Evon abirsashas.  If anyone can tell me how to take a screen shot and how to post it, I'd be glad to do so.  Since previous testing with capturing and taming intelligent animals, then removing the pet tag didn't cause this, I'm assuming it can only happen with immigrants.

More experimentation shows that you can't see what it is doing.  I also realized that it might mess with any levers I have...

To take a screen shot, select the dwarf fortress window. Hold alt and press print screen. Then, open up an image editing program like MS paint, then paste it into the program. Ctrl V is how, if you didn't know. Afterwards, save the file, go to a website like http://imageshack.us and upload it. Post the link, or post it in image tags. Image posted!

Also... As to your gremlin immigrant, I have an idea. I believe he came in as a tame pet of someone, but since he's friendly, belongs to you, and is intelligent, you can set jobs just as with your dwarves.

Interesting. I'd like to know specifically how to accomplish this, as it could result in Fun (TM)...

To take a screenshot, just press your 'Print Screen' button (it's directly above Insert on most keyboards). Press Alt + Print Screen to only capture the active window (i.e. the DF window).

Open Paint, choose Edit -> Paste, and save the file. PNG files work best with the color scheme DF uses.

Also, she doesn't appear on the military screen and once recruited, cannot be made a civilian again.

After toying with this a bit, I've noticed several things:
She will not do most labors, such as hauling and stone engraving, but she will fish.
She doesn't list anyone in her relationship list, and has not attempted to talk to anyone in the meeting halls.
She refused to drink from my well, but designating a water source right next to it works fine.
She never gets happy or unhappy thoughts.
She hasn't harassed my unlinked lever, though whether that will change when it controls my gates remains to be seen.

More may be added later.

Had this once too, I believe it is the [USE_ANY_PET_RACE] tag in the entity definition. Happens quite rarely though, mine came as one of the pets of an animal trainer.

Edit:
I cannot remember the tree hugging menace bringing any caged gremlin, so maybe also [USE_EVIL_ANIMALS] is needed. For the sake of completeness, the entity had [ETHIC:EAT_SAPIENT_KILL:ACCEPTABLE], [ETHIC:EAT_SAPIENT_OTHER:ACCEPTABLE] and [ETHIC:SLAVERY:UNTHINKABLE].

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

This is something that has apparently come up before. I remember reading about it while poking through threads in the Community Games & Stories section. Tibbles, who was creating a kobold fortress, got not one, but two gremlin pet/immigrants. By his account, neither actually did anything beyond sit around the dinning hall and leach off resources, which is too bad. Strangely enough, both of these Hunters as well.

Having played extensively with Human and Elf fortresses, I can at least say that getting one is not something inherent to simply using a non-dwarven race. It has to be something related to some specific tag somewhere in both Tibbles kobolds and your custom race. Heck knows what that might be though.

Here is the thread, if you're curious. The gremlin hunters only occupy a very marginal portion of the total posts though.

I'm pretty sure it is because of the ANY_PET_RACE tag.  The gremlin is either under cave creatures or evil creatures though, I'm not entirely sure.

EDIT: I've figured out the most likely cause.  Because gremlins are labeled as PET_EXOTIC, it wasn't a proper 'pet', and because it was intelligent and could talk, the game felt obligated to give it a profession.  It'll change into a normal (can be slaughtered) pet when the Dungeon Master shows up.
