Z level won't change!
« on: September 23, 2008, 09:37:50 pm »

I'm new to Dwarf Fortress and I'm having some very annoying difficulties with it.  I'm following a starter guide that tries to say that shift-. and shift-, are to change the z level, but when I try that it doesn't do shit.  Screen doesn't change appearance in any manner.  If I can't get this problem answered I might as well get rid of it because I got this game mainly because it has multiple axises involved and I like that fact.

Try using "<" and ">" (shift-"," and "shift-"." on most keyboards).

You might want to rebind the keys to fit your personal preferences.  I believe the keybinding screen is accessible by the menu you get from pressing escape.

Remember to save your keybindings after redoing them!  It's important!

you could also lookup your keybindings easily in the interface.txt locatet in data/init
the bindings you need are:
CURSOR_UP_Z
CURSOR_DOWN_Z

with mikemayday's it looks like this:
[CURSOR_UP_Z:DIVIDE]
[CURSOR_DOWN_Z:MULTIPLY]

notice that this configuration is also used in:
[SECONDSCROLL_PAGEUP:DIVIDE]
[SECONDSCROLL_PAGEDOWN:MULTIPLY]

i just mailed mike , i think it was yesterday, if he would like to change this overlap so that second mentioned looks like this:

[SECONDSCROLL_PAGEUP:SHIFT+SUBTRACT]
[SECONDSCROLL_PAGEDOWN:SHIFT+ADD]

with the overlap, your z level view is also changed when you try to navigate fast throug the menus, for example when you want some pages up and down in the labor menu of your dwarfs, your view goes up and down too.

he also promised to change the barrels again ^^
yaaay :D

I am in fact using a graphics pack because when my friend recommended this to me he said it was easier on the beginner's eyes.  Which graphics pack I'm using.. that I'm not entirely sure of

you dont need to know
the only thing you want to know is which key triggers the z-level up and downs
so , like i said
just open the file "interface.txt" with the standard windows editor
do a search for "CURSOR_UP_Z"           // "CURSOR_DOWN_Z" follows next
the value on the right will be the key you want to know
you can also, like i also had said before :P , modify this value on your own to use the specific key you want to have, for going up and down in z-view

Shift-5 and Ctrl-5 on both the top row and the numpad will work, as will < and >.

Capslock makes Dwarf Fortress hotkeys not work anymore. They are all case sensitive, even to Capslock.

I recommend unzipping the build you downloaded from the website and not touching much of anything--the game should work and be quite enjoyable. The graphics packs... you'll only grow to hate them more and more. Something about the default letters graphics grows on you. The little "c" walking around your fortress BECOMES a cat. You stop seeing letters, it's almost like the matrix. Don't cheat yourself out of this experience. :)
