Artifact weapons
« on: September 14, 2008, 09:29:19 pm »

I read in an old thread that some users managed to get their dwarves to pick up and use artifact weapons.  I'd love to know how in 40d, as my bone carver just grabbed a craftshop and produced a rainbow trout bone pick (listed as a weapon on the stocks screen), but my legendary miner won't touch it.  It's in the bloody weapons stockpile, so I know the creator's not hanging on to it.

Any ideas?

Hard to say, might be uneqipable in this situation. I would say train a wrestler to champion but then you can't get him to be a normal dwarf again. Have you made it so that the artifact is the only pick he could grab?

Yep.  He sat around on No Job for ten minutes.  I claimed the copper pick I had dumped, and he immediately went for it and set back to work.

To use an artifact weapon, they need to be a champion at using that particular military skill. For picks, that probably means wrestling. Which probably means you won't have much luck getting your legendary miner to wield this artifact pick in his civilian capacity.

On the plus side, I believe a copper pick will dig just as fast as an artifact pick so you are not missing out on much.

My current fortress somehow got two artifact iron maces in a row.  They're wielded by a husband-and-wife team, both legendary macedwarves/wrestlers/marksdwarves/shield users, who continuously patrol the fortress perimeter.

I ran into a similar situation a while back and ended up putting it in a weapon trap for everyone to admire.  Not, perhaps, as neat as having someone use it, but quite a good use for it.

I believe that picks used unarmed skill but are based on your miner skill. Try having a legendary miner use it.
