Cave spiders! :D
« on: September 06, 2008, 11:47:15 pm »

I dug an underground passage through a large portion of my map to shunt water from a river over into my fortress for irrigation for farming.  Part of this passage crossed a chasm, where I built floors and walls to contain the water flow, along with building floors a level above the passage to provide a 'roof' of sorts, keeping it sealed.

I had no idea that there were cave spiders in the chasm.  Now, they've invisibly spread into the lower chambers of my fortress, and there's raw silk everywhere.

Hooray for unexpected profit from a project!

EDIT:  Of course, something a bit more odd happened too - a dead olm just appeared in the still-dry tunnel.  Corpses underwater don't taint the water, do they?

they shouldn't, and you probably either have a cave river or pool or something (if thats the river source you tapped into, and he washed down stream).

Theres more surprises in store for you though as well,

The water's not down the channel yet, and the dead olms are appearing in areas where water shouldn't get to at all.  Also - there is a nearby underground river that I have the tunnel drain into so that the whole tunnel is always flowing, in case I want to build water wheels near my fortress.  Still, should it be lobbing dead fish multiple Z-levels upward into dry areas?

olms are vermin.  So they'll spawn randomly.  Further more, if they happen to spawn and walk into a spider web, they die.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

Okay, that might explain it.  Maybe they simultaneously spawn along with cave spider webs?

I do know that, when I watched, they didn't spawn on top of spider webs.
