Quality for more room types

Why not have quality/names for more rock gardens and jails?
I wrote up jail, and will have rock garden done later.

Meager Jail
Modest Jail
Prison
Decent Prison
Fine Prison
Dungeon
Grand Dungeon
Royal Dungeon

Also, beds in jails will be claimed by the jail and only available for use to prisoners on ropes.

Having quality apply to jails would be sort of counter-intuitive, since even in the most luxurious fortress, you may very well want your dungeon to be dank, nasty, and horrible. By some standards, a "quality" prison is one WITHOUT the engraved blue garnet floor and cages made out of solid platinum.

I was thinking that this would be cool for Tower of London scenarios, but also useful for future items with negative room value.  You'd want to keep the value of the room as LOW as possible.

AKA if you put a nice bed, water, and an artifact statue, you'd get

That makes sense, but it also restricts the player, I think. After all, some people might want different prison systems than other people (for instance, well-furnished prisons are good for keeping dwarves happy and rehabilitating them), so I'd like to see legitimate options left open.

Things like statue gardens and zoos could use quality, I guess, but I'm not sure how necessary it is, since dwarves get happy thoughts already about seeing nice things in them. However, I suppose things like "(s)he attended/hosted a party in a superb setting recently" would be appropriate.

Hell, I leave my nobles pissed off that the legendaries are living higher on the hog than them all the time...

Point being that just because there's more than one valid way to play doesn't mean it can't encourage certain behaviours.  People get upset because they can't meet all the demands and keep everybody ecstatic, but that's real life.  You have to choose where you focus your efforts.

If you want to keep your legendary craftsdwarf happy while he's in jail, it comes at the cost of annoying the noble a little bit.


So far as the statue gardens, I think it's more of a qualification thing.  How good IS this garden?

I love this -- I can just see Urist McHauler punching a noble so that he gets to spend a month in the luxury suit *ahem* awful, terrible jail cell (that happens to be much nicer than his own three-square room carved out of mud)

Sometimes there are political prisoners, hostages, accused nobles or the like who need to be treated well. The man in the Iron Mask, for example.

As Granite suggested, a nice jail should keep the inmates happier but annoy the people who are doing the sentencing. I like it - anything that introduces more noble dynamics is good, IMO.

Other things that could use quality modifiers include barracks and archery ranges and any designated meeting area.

Also, I suggest being able to declare a "hallway" off of statues. This "room" would serve no purpose beyond giving you a sense of how well-decorated your fortress is; if your main entrance is a Grand Hallway, then you know you're doing pretty well.

You both make good points. I can see certain nobles getting annoyed at a prison having lavish furnishings, especially depending upon their personalities. Personality traits affecting nobles' thoughts (more than they do now?) is a good idea overall.

For example: Your empathetic mayor probably won't mind if your prison is all fancy and rehabilitative, but your hammerer sure as hell will, and your captain of the guard might if he's a jackass.
