I liked Othob Rithol's suggestion. Yeah, as it is, legendary seems a bit meaningless, but I think Toady plans to change the skills and attributes system in the future. I do think that the skill level should go up much slower, so there's less 'legendary' people.

Yes he will. [Combat Arc]
I agree, Othob's suggestion was the best so far.

So you are telling me that in centuries to come, in distant taverns, bards will be singing about the skill my 26 legendary warriors (out of 50): each by name?

No Legendary is only the term used for the highest level of skill... Legendary skilled individuals arn't in it of themselves legendary. (though it is somewhat easy for them to become so)

Hense why every champion doesn't have a title.

I made long (as possible) archery ranges before.  Marksdwarves seemed to only get exp when they hit the target (or at least, the other end of the range--it was a narrow hallway) though I had no way of checking, but it seemed to be more effective (training them to hit faraway targets and they can do it better).

That works?  Well all my short archery ranges are going to have to get scrapped.  Well, maybe in my next fort.  I'm suffering from a critical bone and wood shortage after I pissed off the elves, since there are no fish, no trees and nothing to hunt but Giant Eagles in my current fort, so anything that makes them train faster but take more bolts to do it isn't so useful.

Related: Why do they have to use stone targets anyway?  Why can't I get straw as a byproduct of milling and use it to make straw faced archery targets, so the bolts can be reused?  It'll have to wait until stack handling is fixed so turning groups of single bolts back into stacks is viable.  Maybe a system where arrows degrade with use depending on the Damblock of what they hit (stone and metal constructions will need a virtual Damblock that's set to a very high number) and the damage modifier of the material they're made out of, and archery targets getting an artificially low Damblock.  Arrows that degrade enough are destroyed.  XXIron BoltsXX and similar should be used for training if better quality metal bolts are available.  It seems unlikely that a metal arrow that hit an unarmoured animal wouldn't have a high chance of being usable after being pulled out, and that Adamantine Bolts won't get bent or lose their edge even after passing through steel armour.

I don't support.

One can become great through training. (But I'm all for actual combat giving more experience.)

Works?  I have no proof that it works, but I like to think that it does.

You can only learn so many theories in sparring, it takes real combat experience to find out which ones work and which don't. Hence why true legendary warriors are those who have seen a lot of combat AND trained a lot AND were smart enough to invent theories of their own.

I would like to see dwarves train to improve their attributes, though. Maybe like a dwarven gym, college, dojo or something formal like that ;)

We already have attribute training. Just have em pump dry screw pumps :)

Or just sit around talking to other dwarves... thats the best attribute training their is. I locked all my children away in one fort and they were all superdwarves by the time they grew up, due to all legendary social skills.

I have no doubt that A: the current system is a WIP, and B: The current exp awards for tasks are inflated to aid in testing. Perhaps I should said something about that in my rant   :-*

BTW -now my forces are 37/54 champion.

Actually Toady might change the old system when he will work on the Combat Arc I suppose.
Either way, like Ive said, this "problem" is non-existant if you modify your game. Make the other civs stronger, and champions wont be so hardcore at all..well of course most of the players wont mess around with the RAWs, but this is the only thing what you can do now, to balance the game. [Now if we could change the RoF for ranged weapons...that would be just awesome also  ;D]
