"Mark-out mode" to go with Note mode?
« on: September 02, 2008, 11:21:21 am »

I don't know if this has been suggested before - I'm not sure what keywords to use and so my searches haven't returned anything.  My apologies in advance if I'm going over old ground...

(... and if so, could you point me at the relevant thread/dev note?)

What would be nice is if we could "mark out" the layout of our fortresses in advance, and then toggle this overlay on or off.  Being able to toggle it on/off would mean you could keep referring back to it and change it as necessary, without having it cluttering the screen all the time.

It'd be like marking out for digging (but without dwarves trying to dig it out, of course!) and could be used for laying out walls & channels on the surface and/or where to dig underground.

(I find it annoying to use the digging tool to mark out an area to see if an idea will "fit" and then discover later that I forgot to unmark some tiles when it's too late and the dorfs have breached my moat or magma tunnel or...  ::))

I remember a post a while back suggesting something like that, let me look...

...Ah yes, "blueprints" is the term used in that thread.

I very much approve of this general idea, though I'm sure people will differ as to how it should be implemented.
