The rise and fall of the Plaited Lash
« on: August 28, 2008, 12:12:55 am »

Situiated along some untamed wilderness in a temperate land of little elevation the Plaited Lash was founded in the year 200, with sandy clay for farming the colony hollowed out vast underground farms and filled the stockpiles to bursting with food to fill thousands of barrels including 550 of iron, 174 copper and incredibly even one made from bullion.
Rich were her mines and busy her workers. Much joy was had by all, with parties held in beautiful meeting rooms with artifact tables, and served legendary meals, and with bedrooms like personal palaces. Even the dragon that visited did little damage, killing 5 dogs and tearing off one wood burner's arm, before getting shot through the heart by the first bolt fired at it. Ahh the parties we held in that hunter's honor!
With Large deposits of magnetite and limestone, with lava tube nearby fourteen smelters were engaged in her metals industry, Native platinum and aluminium were found in good quantity, sadly lacking was any gold or bismuth. Hundreds of uncut gems are stored neatly in chests, and 144 thousands of common and uncommon stone has been mined, with a force of 45 legendary miners performing the work. The latest project being an entire level made into 16x16 rooms for the common dwarves to live in.
The Plaited Lashes was a Fortress ruled by equality, as much as possiable all workers had equal rights to do any jobs they wished, only ocasionally would a workshop be restricted to even novice level skills, thusly the dwarves would do work that suited their desires. We have a Dwarf that loves to cook, and despite having 200 dwarves that know how to cook, and the kitchen being open to all, this one cook has made over 90% of the meals created in the kitchen.
252 dwarves grace the halls of the plaited lashes, of the adults nine of ten have learned so many skills as to have all physical attrubites of the highest abilities, yet today only two dwarves still work her vast halls, their task to make enough coffins and give their friends a decent burial. The settelers shun the place of so much death, so that the pair have labored alone for the past three years...

I give you the Plaited Lashes and the story of Domas Usenunib Urrith Edan.

Too many statistics, too few story. I personally find more enjoyment in early fortresses, and novel-like stories. Honestly, I do not find the fact that you had '550 iron barrels' particularly interesting. I would be more interested if it was more of a narrative.

Bembul said; "Early in 211, the Mayor saw that we had too much food and ordered all the farms to be put fallow, course this did not set none too well with the folk what liked goin out and grubbin in the dirt, the previous mayor bin a planter herself, and had expanded the above ground farms, and kept the forges building barells, and the weavers and clothmakers churnin out bags, though the clothes was fallin off most of the poorer folks." Bembul pauses in his talk, looks around and steps over to one of several piles of armour in the narrow hallway for the main residence block, sorts through the pile for a bit and rises with a couple of bones and rushes off, leaving Urist, the mountain home laision to hurry after.

Some time later Urist catches up with Bembul as Bembel is putting the finishing touches to a coffin. Urist asks, "can we talk abou..." "Wait!" exclaims Bembul as he rushes off looking for a drink. Urist sighs and rushes off following Bembul
