How often is this supposed to happen? It seems that everytime i start a new fortress/adventurer it gets corrupted as soon as they get strong. I've never played a game without having to start over because of corrupt saves. Does anyone know what causes them to become corrupt? It's making it impossible to have fun and the frequency seems to be increasing.

Run chkdsk (I'm assuming windows) and I'll bet you'll find a lot of bad sectors.  Either try downloading a fresh copy and moving the save over, or if hat doesn't work do a full re-install of your OS, complete with a disk format. 

Since I'll bet you are crashing all the time, you probably need to do this anyway.  (Make sure to backup bla bla bla you get the point.)


EDIT: I reread the topic title.. are you using some sort of disk compression?  Or are you somehow running straight from the zip folder?

no, its running unzipped, but i'll bet reformatting would fix it since its probably a result of spyware or some crap...

Hate to go all missionary here but if you'd like to avoid spyware and viruses you could create a small linux partition.  Ubuntu is a really good distribution that includes something called Wubi which lets you install Ubuntu without creating an actual partition.  You can get Wubi from that site without having to download the Ubuntu disc, but having the disc lets you use it as a LiveCD (try out Linux without actually installing anything).  Just make a 5 or 6 GB install using Wubi and, if you don't like linux, you can just uninstall it like any other Windows program.  No viruses.  No spyware.

You can run DF in Linux using a program called Wine.  Runs great.

If it really is a bad disk (running scandisk/chkdsk/whatever it's called now would figure that out), then you need to replace it.

Yes, formatting would work around the bad sectors, but modern HDs already do that automatically. By the time they're actually /visible/ (as write errors), your disk is basically 99% dead already, and you should get your stuff off while you still have a chance.

I wiped the drive and reinstalled the OS and haven't gotten any errors since. Also, does anyone else experience dramatic performance increase while running in windowed mode? I had been running it fullscreen until now, but i'll never go back.

That means your video card can't handle drawing the game in fullscreen.  Even today's $500-600 range cards can have this problem.  OpenGL just isn't used in enough programs, so it doesn't get as much support.
