Space Useage

What's everyone doing with the space between the underground river and the chasm, and the chasm and the lava river? Most of the fortresses I've seen tend to sprawl hugely between the outside and the underground river, then taper to a single or double-wide tunnel straight through to the lava. Seems like that's a huge waste of space, but I can't for the life of me figure out what to do with it other than build a ton of bedrooms that I don't need.

Well, it's useful to put bedrooms east of the river so that once you get to the lava, your metalsmiths have a place to sleep that's close to work. Since they have bedrooms there, you want to build a dining room for them, too. The dining room does no good with all your food stockpiles across the fortress, so you'll need to get an aqueduct across the chasm to bring water so you can get a farm set up over there, with kitchens and breweries nearby (barrels won't be a problem once you get to the lava and can start forging them from metal). And you'll want bedrooms for your farmers on that side. Then you need plenty of stockpile space for food and metal goods over there, so they're not always hauling things across the fortress... and it's a good idea to dedicate some room to just mining for gems and precious metals, too.

Between the river and the chasm is where pretty much my entire fortress is, an avenue I pursued for defensive reasons.  It is a decision that has led to mixed results.

My underground river was a single screen away from the cave face, so I was forced to develop between it and the chasm.

The problem with this is that, for the most part, you're likely to face nastier threats from the chasm and the river than you would from outside.
