Well, I guess they can be food if the dwarves are exceedingly hungry, but that's not the right way to do things.

I can one-up the batsplosion on a very short-lived fort I had.  Major river [one of the 15-tile wide ones], packed with hippos and carp.  I thought that having two pages of each was bad enough.
Then the hippos started breeding.  50 hippo calves in a single season.

Sadly, I abandoned that fort after a hunter sniuck in with a migrant wave and started annoying the hippos.  By the time I realized he was there, he'd already spent all his bolts and gotten his arms bit off.  One ill-prepared, ill-equipped military later and the hippo that'd bitten his arms off had earned a name and a double title, Glimmerbraid the Untrustworthy Chasm.

With Glimmerbraid charging for my main gate, my engineer dead after he tried to grab the hunter's sock, and absolutely nothing left to do, I abandoned.  Sad, too - that was an impressive map.
