How to correctly start adventure mode: The answer
« on: August 21, 2008, 04:34:52 pm »

Just get a proficient melee weapon skill. Preferably a sword/axe/hammer

Try to have at least competent in armor and shield and maybe wrestler.

Novice swimming so you could train it up in the first 7 deep pool you find instead of looking for a 4 or less deep pool.

Try to go to a dwarf fortress and kill a few wolves on the way. If you survive, you might be able to recruit some dwarfs. Look around and try every dwarf you find.

Then you should be able to kill a few giants and cyclops.

Savescum at your own discretion.

That's what I picked up from the question thread and a few practice runs.

I generally discovered that dwarfs join you more willingly.

Detail:

I never tested elves.

I only play as Human.

I only play as swordsman.

This info needs improvement.

Additions:

K4tz: Combat in adventurer mode is almost life like. You will want to always face the least enemies and avoid being flanked or being in the middle.

Adventurer is pretty easy (and I don't abuse throwing). Before giant cave spiders I could easily wipe out an entire world with an axe or hammer user with no problems other than the occasional mortal arrow wound. The key is to just be careful around multiple enemies (ie don't run into the middle of 50 zombies/skeletons and expect to kill them all without over exerting), and to not attack tough enemies unless you're ready for them.

Hammerer is easier early on - blunt weapons don't get stuck in enemies, which makes it easier to fight swarms, or train at a low-level.

Spears and swords can get pierced in the enemy and lead to over-exertion, which WILL kill you.

Dwarves start off slightly easier due to their steel armour - although their "towns" are terrible and WILL cause you to starve to death.

Quick-travel is your very, very good friend.

Elves are better for just goofing around because they don't get attacked by most critters - exceptions include zombies and their brethren.

I still don't see how one can live for long without cheating the save.  Also if your weapon gets stuck just pull it out.  I only had a problem once with a giant who was stronger then me and stole my sword...so I bashed him to death with my shield.

I usually carry two or three swords with me for that purpose since I lose them so often.

I usually get a melee character to survive on the first try. Take trinkets from abandoned fortresses or giant's caves, trade for a new shield, then weapon, then armor. Train to proficient, and semi-megabeasts will die for you. Train on them and elves. You'll soon be godlike.

Hi!

Snall: It basically boils down to a mixture of luck in the beginning and quite a lot of patience afterwards.

Initially, besides your settings there is one aspect of luck in it, namely which attributes gains you get. Depending on those, things can be easier or more difficult for you in the beginning.

Then, simply being patient and not going after quest monsters in the beginning and instead focusing on leveling should get you past the dangerous early stage. If you have wrestling and armor skill besides a melee weapon skill, you should have the right equipment and skill to have a good chance of surviving encounters right away.

However, you are right that combat in DF is dangerous, so even with the most perfect setup, you may still get killed by a lucky shot. But if you are careful (train ambush before going to a site with ranged weapon users and then use ambush all the time there, for instance), it does not happen all the time.
