I've been sieged a number of times in my current fort, and all of the sieges thus far have been fairly normal.

This time, however, I got the 'A vile force of darkness has arrived!' message - but absolutely no goblins showed up. None. I tabbed through the units list several times just to make certain that I wasn't imagining things, but there were definitely no goblins at all.

Hi!

This is just a wild guess, but have you done something to make the elves angry? In other words, could that be an elven siege?

I have read that in the latest versions, elven siegers have ambush skill, so you will not see them until it is too late.

Yup, my very first siege ever in this game was a siege from the Elves.  I knew they were at war with me, and I guessed that it was them (it was spring and they weren't coming to trade), but all I knew for certain was that someone unknown was besieging me.  Then they appeared a short way out from my fort entrance, I drafted everyone in a desperate attempt to save myself, since I hadn't really been expecting a full-on siege, but rather a small ambush, and won with only one loss (I had nerfed ammo).  I was happy.  Disappointed that my farmer, who was now missing both eyes, wasn't getting rescued, since it would be cool to have a blind farmer, but I figured I could live without such a luxury.

My next fort I was expecting an elven ambush, and now I have an elven zoo!

Just stopping back in to say that this was, indeed, an elven siege. I sent out a few squads to check around the map after reading this and sure enough encountered a bunch of elven swordsmen.

I figure I'll get back to my logging right after I finish cleaning up their corpses.
