Floodgate?

One of my favorite simple defense strategies consists of

It's important to wear lots of face paint while you program. And you can type with your long Gene Simmons tongue.

Well because hikato loves flatland and castle's my defense involves abuse of traps (Cage traps randomly around the castle and Stone inside) plus an insane breeding force of wardogs randomly placed around the enterance to my underground fortress.

I find that a simple wall is best. Put marksdwarves on top if you're feeling fancy.

If you're feeling really fancy you make the wall into fortifications.

My current favorite fortress is built on a glacier, so I have very little terrain variance. So my simple defence is a massive wall of ice built between the glacial slopes, which I leveled off on my side of the wall to prevent bypassing. There are only two entrances (on the north and southern sides of the map where traders pass through) guarded by a squad of axedwarves at each gate and a 3-z level 'guard tower' construct with fortifications facing the wall and the road for marksdwarves to shoot through (I'm still working on providing the marksdwarves)

I also have channels on each side of a wagon-friendly road to force invading forces down a predictable path; access to the rest of the glacier isn't possible without actually entering the fortress. I don't have a single trap in my fortress and although the whole setup sounds complicated, it isn't really  ;D. Just a big wall and trenches that force invaders along a single narrow path.
