I just got ambushed by wolves however me and the wolves appeared at the bottom of a died out pond.

That's happened to me quite a few times, going back several releases.

Only really caused problems when there was another animal outside the pond which could see the adventurer, preventing travel and keeping them stuck in the pond.

Probably not desired behavior, but won't be a problem when climbing skills are implemented.
