[39F] Drowning bug
« on: August 16, 2008, 10:59:11 pm »

I was playing in adventurer mode with a dwarf that could swim. Three times I went from swimming to drowning, probably due to stunning, although I am not 100% sure. Two of those times it did not take me out of drowning and I had no means of escape.

It happens when I get into a fight or when I fall into the water, but not every single time.

Skill was at novice, but showed up as swimming before.

The wiki article on swimming may shed some light on this:
Quote
If a creature is surrounded by a blue status icon, they are drowning. If they cannot reach air soon, they will die. Swimmers with a normal or above rank will simply be able to swim toward the nearest air supply. Swimmers of novice or below, however, will panic when they begin to drown, and will have to get out via ramp or stairway.

The following situations will make a novice swimmer panic:

    * Falling into water from a height.
    * Diving two Z-Levels beneath the surface.

The amount of weight a creature is carrying does not make them drown faster.

That *does* explain the falling drowning.

It doesn't explain why I started drowning because a carp bumped into me and got its face smashed by my mace.

If you start to fight then you'll start drowning too. The problem is that there's no way to stop panicking and drowning.

But it didn't do that consistently. I fought a sea lamprey before the carp. That's why I thought of it as a bug.

I think I will go test the fighting -> drowning a bit more.

I was under the impression (not sure how accurate this is) that swimming causes exertion, and that if a dwarf becomes exhausted while swimming then he'll eventually drown, no matter how good a swimmer he is (with higher levels of swimming skill allowing you to swim for longer). Combat also causes exertion, so if you exhaust yourself fighting several creatures in a row, you might be fine for the first few, but drown when you get to that one carp.

Certainly I've had an incident where my adventurer just spontaneously started drowning with no combat interactions at all. I figure he just got tired.
