So cages are probably the only way to have a totally nonviolent fortress.  That's kind of boring. 

Think of this.. you spend the first 10 years, or 20 years of a fortress, simply collecting monsters in cages.  You kill nothing, but cage everything that you can.  By the end of that time, you have what, 1,000-2,000 monsters in cages.
You make one entire Z-level just a sea of cages, in one gargantuan room.  As you place the cages, you link them to a single lever.

In the room there are megabeasts, goblins, iron men, whatever you've got.  One day, you pull the lever.  Just see what happens.  Then with whatever's left, send in your entire population, drafted into the army.   Finish it off with a big aqua-bath or magma-bath.  Then visit later with an adventurer, and see what's there.  Now that's preparation.
