[39f] Lock-up
« on: August 19, 2008, 08:23:55 am »

I see that 39f is the old version now, and this was entirely my own fault anyway, but since it locked up Dwarf Fortress, I thought you might want to know.

I was playing full screen on Windows XP, and I accidentally held down the shift key (for eight seconds) while pondering my next move. This brought up the Windows 'FilterKeys' notification, while minimizing Dwarf Fortress. Well, I'd had Windows break in before (when I've been away from the computer and the screen-saver started), so I just canceled the 'FilterKeys' notice and clicked on the minimized DF on the taskbar.

DF came back up as usual, and I was able to arrow key around to look at everything, but no other keys or commands worked. I couldn't even use Escape to save the game. And when I brought Windows back up, I couldn't close DF or even reboot the computer. I had to hit the reset button (which lost everything in DF after the last seasonal save).

Maybe I'd better not fall asleep on the keyboard again, huh?

:)

Yeah these "oh, you pressed a key for a long time... surely you want to use our totally annoying and useless feature"-things in Windows have killed a few programs and games for me also.

Not DF yet, mind you, but enough other things. Even if you disable it in the options it pops up from time to time. It is very annoying, because I like to think with keys pressed while playing DF or programming stuff.

Yeah these "oh, you pressed a key for a long time... surely you want to use our totally annoying and useless feature"-things in Windows have killed a few programs and games for me also.

You get three options:
Leave it on (shift is now stuck until you figure out how to fix it)
Disable the keys (shift is now off, but you disabled only that key)
Change settings (lets you change all the sticky key settings, but Shift is left on and stuck)

Freaking retarded.  Took me forever to find the settings when I hit disable once (it's under Accessibility Options).
