Dragon Defeated by Kitten Distraction (39e)
« on: August 11, 2008, 09:24:16 am »

Dragon spawns at south border of the map and immediately makes a beeline for my restrained kitten defense force.  For minutes I'm watching him try to flame the kitten to no effect:

I left out the most boring part in the middle where I kept waiting for something to happen.  Finally I gave up and sent a squad of marksdwarves (fairly untrained as you can see) and some wrestlers down to tangle with him.  He is still so focused on making a nice crispy kitten kabob that he doesn't defend himself at all while being pelted with iron bolts:

At some point the AI should notice it's not doing any damage and select a new target or move until a new target comes into range.  Furthermore when new creatures move into the area and damage it the AI should take a look at what's actually dangerous and adjust its targeting to suit.

Do you have temperature off maybe? The fire should not just obliterate the kitten, but also destroy your restraints and traps. At least, that happened in previous versions, haven't had a dragon in a while.

Haha!  ;D
The kitten is playing with this dragon!  ;D
Also, as a side note, those dwarves killed the dragon in a couple of seconds..I think the default size for dragons should be at least 40, instead of 20. They are dying very easily now, just like all other megabeasts also.

I had to turn temp off for a bit while I figured out how to properly deal with fire snakes and imps at my first ever magma map.  All my earlier attempts ended with flaming fun ::) in my food/booze stockpile.  Apparently hunters are quite the hazard when you don't notice they caught an imp and someone butchered it. ;)

The problem as I saw it was that the AI didn't adapt to the init changes and tell the dragon to use his/her bite attack instead.  At the very least it should have taken out some of my war dogs.  I'm just making my comparison to the Angband AI which offers options for creatures to learn which attacks work best or to automatically know which ones work best against your character - instead of mindlessly using that which is completely useless over and over.

Turning off temperature breaks all kinds of intended features, I don't know why you're surprised.  Smarter AI is always cool though.
