[39f] - large screen causes huge slowdown
« on: August 11, 2008, 04:05:57 pm »

I did a cursory search of the buglist and didn't come up with anything. My apologies if this has already been posted.

I set the screen size to something absurdly huge -- 180x110 tiles -- and my framerate went from a steady 25 or so to about 10. I've tried both resolutions (default and really big) on 32f, so I can confirm it was not the upgrade that caused the slowdown (the fort was gen'd on 32e).

I'm running DF in WINE (v. 1.1.2) on Linux (Ubuntu Hardy), so if some Windows users can confirm that it's not just me, that would be helpful. I know I have OpenGL acceleration working (already played that game =P), so that's not it. I tried lowering G_FPS_CAP (from 25 to 15) with no noticeable effect.

From what I've heard, DF's rendering backend is pretty efficient, which leads me to believe this is a bug and not just an expected side effect of drawing more tiles. Fix would be appreciated if reasonable--I like being able to see my entire fort at once!
