Living in the cold; what do I need to know?
« on: August 07, 2008, 10:12:20 pm »

I'm thinking of starting a fortress in a tundra or glacier environment (maybe even a hermit game, just because I'm a masochist). What do I need to know?

Bring wood for beds. And don't expect a water supply.

Really? Magma melts it now? Last I heard, it didn't effect walls.

Magma will melt ice walls, but leave rock walls and all constructed walls alone, even wood walls.

Constructed ice walls are also heat-proof.

I once dug out a wide channel directly underneath a frozen brook on a tundra map, then filled it with magma from a nearby pipe. The result was a  lake in the shape of a brook; turns out you can't melt the map-edge tiles so it never ends up flowing. Still made a perfectly fine water source, though.

Thats a relief. I was afraid my ice fort on a glacier would melt upon contact with a dragon. Now i just have to worry about the ice foundations melting...

Hm, that's actually a bit disappointing, imo. :)

If constructed ice walls melted, wouldn't they just be replaced with obsidian. ???

You have to keep in mind that this is game is not done yet. Check back in a few years if you want melting ice walls and such.
