Behaving as a militia
« on: August 06, 2008, 12:07:21 pm »

I noticed that when the "hunting" labour is enabled, the dwarves will arm themselves with whatever weapons and armour are enabled. They will then use their weapons, at least in the case of crossbows, against proximal hostiles.

I take advantage of this by enabling the hunting labour on many dwarves, enabling them to repel minor threats. The main disadvantage is that it's a tad difficult to enable hunting on every single peasant.

Hope that people benefit from this bit of information.

Problem with this is that if you have anything nasty on the map, like hippos, they will attempt to hunt that.

A herd of migrating (I guess, they hadn't been on the map for the previous four years) elephants appeared one day and single-tuskedly killed my entire hunting force before I had even noticed them. The wrinkly menace strikes again!

Don't forget dwarves with hunting enabled will apparently sleep wherever they want, including on traps, with potentially hilarious results.
