Hey guys.
So i started out on a map that looked pretty nice but unfortunately it had a pretty nice river that was absolutely reeking with carp.
The river is pretty much the only water source on the map except murky pools, but i got a temporary solution to the problem before i can make some rope for a well, i'm going to try and brew gratuitous amounts of alcohol.
But do dwarves drink water even when the fortress has tons of wine?

First whiff of carp was caught when my craftsdwarf was pulled into the river and mutilated.

Heres what I do with carp-infested rivers.

Make a ditch leading away from the river, but dont connect it to the river yet. Make a down stair then an up stair so that your dwarves can walk in the ditch, the make a floodgate at the edge of the ditch (closest to the river). Attach it to a lever, then make a channel on the ground seperating the ditch and floodgate. Pull the lever, wait, pull again, and use "i" to set the ditch as the drinking/fishing area. Next, press "o"rders and go to zone orders and change it to "Only area fishing/drinking" instead of prefer.

Do what he said, but instead of making a floodgate, make a grate. Closing your water ditch off to the stream is a bad idea; you don't want murky water.

Killing carp? Marksdwarves.

No no no, that's a sure way to waste all your ammo on very secondary targets.
I think you should find a use for them, like walling off an area of the river and releasing your goblin prisoners there, and thus having a fun and original way of disposing of them. If you're lucky, the gobo's might take some carps out, too.

I already have a plan for my gobbos. A sort of combat-training facility for my dwarves involving a huge arena with different minigames like "kill the cougar" and CTF. I even got plans to set up a gladiator tournament and make the dwarves fight eachother with the companion.
T's gonna be awesome.
But i had to start all over again because df crashed. :(

Carp actually can make a really effective defense system in Terrifying biomes. Harpies that path over the water get pulled in, ogres crossing bridges get pushed off, and the rest of the plethora of existing evil creatures tend to drown/die very quickly.

For killing carp, I recommend marksdwarves or drowning them by dirverting the river.

Build a ditch leading away from the brook/river but not connecting to it. Build a wall hatch and connect it to a lever, and after the hatch put in some wall bars, this (should) allow water only to pass through when the hatch is open, as the bars will stop all creatures, thus (hopefully) keeping your drinking area free of creatures.

i do this with every water source and magma source to stop damned nasties getting in.

Dig/channel  a tunnel but stop  2 squares away from the source, dig a ramp down, smooth / then carve fortifications on it, then from the top channel out the last square, then floor over it.

Now nothing nasty can get into you're base, whilst you've still got access to magma/water/
