Help me, I'm drowning!
« on: March 30, 2009, 07:46:11 pm »

Simple suggestion today:

Dwarves who are drowning should send out a "please help me" message to anyone with healthcare and a decent swim skill to drag them out of the moat. Of course, this probably won't help much until priorities are properly handled, but still.

Did you just day mass suicide?

This reminds me of a story. Specifically "The Cairo Chicken Massacre"

I think it'd be a nice idea however. To help those who are drowning ... problem is dwarves can't (from what I've experienced) swim between Z levels. I've seen animals do it but if a dwarf goes under he needs to find a staircase helping him up and fast...
It'd be a nice idea to have animals that could drag him up though. Helper dogs! Assign them to dwarves who frequent dangerous areas! Did the hunter fall into the water? The HELPER dog gets him up! Does the hauler have too much to do? The HELPER dog will take some burden too! Is the marksdwarf running out of bolts? The HELPER DOG will fetch a fresh supply!

All hail the helper dog!

There's also the secondary issue that very few dwarves can swim...so if you want them to help, they need to be able to pull the drowning dwarf out from the side of the pool.

Maybe that can be solved temporarily by treating every water square as a staircase, for dwarves who can swim?

Seems that'd be too easy though doesn't it? Even a novice swimmer would swim out of a watery death like that.
If only dwarves who were good at swimming could swim between Z levels that'd sort it out.. not sure how the game is programmed though so I don't rightly know if that's a good solution.
