tip for adventurer forts
« on: August 08, 2008, 07:25:44 pm »

so there had been some discussion about how to get items to stay in a single spot so they wouldn't be spread all around a huge area randomly when you try and build a fort for your adventurer or try and build a stockpile of items for him to access in the world

well 2things i've tried really help:

1.)  build it on a nano-fortress

2.)  never deconstruct your wagon, and leave stuff in it that you want your adventurer to find

stuff doesn't get scattered from a wagon, I've found, so when you embark, load it up with steel weapons and barrels of booze and food and armor and what-have-you and it will be right where you left it!

ta-da!

Just make sure to bring wood.

Also, do monsters destroy the wagon?  I assume they can, if they can break down doors and that sort of thing.

yeah but it is unlikely that any megabeast would happen to be standing where you dropped your fort, and i assume you would abandon it within a year or two like i did

also, can you move items TO a wagon?  that would be fantastiic!

I've heard that using a trade depot to deposit items that you want an adventurer to find does the same thing, or has that changed since the 2d version?

I thought the trade depot way still worked, but I am not certain. As of a few versions ago, any sufficiently heavy container (or object, I suppose) will not move. Anything in these containers seems to stay, too. This was proven when my weapon bin, stuffed to the brim with random crap and an artifact bismuth spear Kiddirimir, was in the exact spot I had left it.

That was a good thing.

Mechanisms are heavy, and I'm fairly certain you can bin them. Hm, could you make a mechanism bin and get a weapon put into it with some working? That would do quite well I think.

I tried the depot way in the new version and can confirm it does not work, the only way is to put the items in a heavy chest.

Has anyone ever tried placing a bunch of stuff in a cavern, setting up a rockfall to seal it off, then setting up another rigged rockfall to allow access to it again attached to a lever? If there is no path out will things scatter?

I made a maze with a tomb of a badass Mace Lord in the middle, with everything masterfully engraved, surrounded by artifact weaponry.

My first adventurer stepped on a pressure plate which releases a giant cave spider and was instantly killed. I think I did well.

Pretty sure things only get scattered to walkable areas.  If it's in a blocked off area, however, it may get moved out of that area to a walkable area as that area will no longer be walkable.

I have a question that is vital for my latest adventurer fort. Can they operate catapults/ballistas?
