I breached the pits, immediately walled them off without seeing any demons, and not long afterwards my legendary engraver is engraving images of a specific demon that was released. 3/4 of his engravings are of this, even though no one in my fort has actually seen any demons yet!

Engraved on the floor is a masterfully designed image of Rato Cinderponder the demon by Zaneg Zulbaniden. Rato Cinderponder is striking a menacing pose. The artwork relates to the release of the demon Rato Cinderponder by careless miners in the deepest recesses of Snarledwires in the late summer of 54.

I know this is a result of the way historical events are recorded, but it's a bit unrealistic. However, the engravings will be accurate once I let the demons out and squash them with a massive cave-in.

"Seeing" is sort of a nebulous idea as far as fortress history goes.  They engrave things that exist or happened somewhere on the map, not what they personally saw.

I'll note it down, but yeah, it's a bit tricky.  Not this case in particular, but the general idea of controlling that sort of information.
