Draw a DF desktop icon
« on: October 31, 2007, 08:43:00 am »

I made a shortcut to Dwarf Fortress and placed it proudly on my desktop next to the other commercial games I enjoy. Looking at it though, I can't help but feel that the orange 'DF' there doesn't really do the game justice.

My challenge to you is to create a new icon! (It doesn't have to be something Toady needs to use in the application, Windows lets you pick alternate icon files for an application.)

It needs to sum up what the Dwarf Fortress game is and the only requirement is that it be 32x32 in size and use 256 colours.

STRIKE THE PIXELS!

How about you do it yourself or choose the other one available?

I'm no good as a pixel artist, so I didn't want to shame the board with my lack of talent. Sorry if I came across as begging for an icon or something.

If no-one really cares about this challenge then that's fine with me - but there are a lot of imaginative people who play this game and it would be cool to see what people come up with, wouldn't it?

When I installed the new version I thought the same thing for a different reason.  The old version is 2d and has a 2d "DF" icon, but the new version is 3d...

32^2 pixels isn't a lot but I'll give it a shot.  I at least want to differentiate between the old version and the new

I think that's a nifty idea.  (Although you might have gotten more responses BEFORE the new version came out so people had something to do while they waited.  :D) I'm no artist either, but maybe I'll play with it over the weekend.

DF sets out a challenge to us with no explanation and no assistance, and each time we fail it becomes more merciless, but we continue in the hopes that we can show it, "See?  I'm doing good, right?  I kept the little men alive!  You're proud of me, right?"

I just use the icon from the wiki, works nicely. And I have the old version using the DF icon.

Why thank you, I think that icon turned out well enough.  :) Of course it's modeled from the image in the corner of the wiki, which in turn is from the DF intro cinematic.
Still, at 16x16 it's a bit small for a desktop icon, though I suppose the pixelated look might be somewhat appropriate.

Tomas asked Dolgan, "What place is this?"
The dwarf puffed on his pipe. "It is a glory hole, laddie. When my people mined this area, we fashioned many such areas."
