Last time a dragon attacked my fortress, I had everyone run inside, closed the doors, lifted the drawbridges, and waited.

The dragon wandered around and, eventually, spontaneously died. Apparently, it flamed a wandering monkey that was near one of my rubbish stockpiles, the rubbish caught fire, then the dragon wandered over the rubbish, caught fire, and subsequently expired.

I used his bones to decorate an artifact steel hammer.

Taming a dragon and getting it to attack hostiles seems inappropriately safe. Try rigging up a separate passage to your fortress for the dragon to live in. Then, when attackers come, close your main entrance and open the entrance to the dragon-passage. For bonus points, put some treasure in its lair.
Isn't this what I said?

Ulg, sorry... as I mentioned, was half asleep.

Back in the 2-D days i had a dragon show up at one of my forts & i just turtled in & locked the doors.

A little while later it was still pacing up & down outside my fort when i got a gobby siege, the gobbys all spawned right on top of the dragon. It was marvelous carnage, flaming gobby bits everywhere. The dragon killed more than half of them, but the gobs came out on top in the end.

I wish id known how to record back then. It was quite a spectacle.
