A neat city generator to tide you over
« on: June 08, 2008, 02:27:00 pm »

I've been fiddling around with this for a little while - it's a rather sophisticated city map generator that takes in dozens of parameters like creek curviness and frequency of parks and how center-weighted the city should be and a whole host of other things, plus a bunch of starting templates to fool around with.  No, there's no game (it's intended to make print-out city maps for tabletop RPGs) but if you need to scratch that random world-generation itch then it's pretty cool.

Gah! Does anyone know how to get Wine to install msi's? This sounds so awesome, but not awesome enough to boot up windows for. Not at the moment, at least.

Bah Tahin, you and your lazy into-windows-booting habits! Don't you suspect that it will be more difficult to get wine to run a msi installer than to just boot windows?

Yes, this is a fun program. I am still playing with it.

I wonder what would happen if someone made a program that allows you to play top-down FPS/RPG/RTS games using these generated maps.

Wine should come with a utility, executable from the commandline, called "msiexec". Just run "msiexec /i (msi name)", and it should install.

Offtopic but Wow, Leerok. Your desktop style freaks me out.

Ontopic, Toady, check out the urban warfare city and roads generation code. It's pretty cool, although it's not complex in the sense that buildings cannot be entered and serve no other purpose other than block your way.

This thing won't install on XP. Apparently, I somehow don't have access to my own registry, even though I'm the admin.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.
