Somebody's got one mostly done.  I haven't seen the code yet, but it seems like it'll work out, assuming all the virtual VMWare stuff is still working out for me.  I don't have a time table though.

We are all just lazy :) but I am getting tired of wine and it's problems.

1. Nice Name :)

2. What wine problems? I'm running with a custom character set (That I've modded), under stock wine, from Debian Unstable, with the open source r300 ATI driver, in windowed mode, with no problems...

Apparently my FPS isn't even that bad when chatting with windows friends on the same(ish) hardware.

Don't get me wrong-- I'd love a native version. It's the only reason I have Wine installed, but you shouldn't really be having many problems with something like DF.

My FPS is fine and DF runs like a dream. (faster under WINE than on the same machine when I used to use windows) however WINE does not like XGl and I need XGl for some work things, so currently it's a choice between work or DF, which mostly means I'm constantly uninstall / reinstalling XGl. Turns out I'm just clueless :/

I just got finished messing around with Google Code and I came across a library (as well as some other things) that is for rendering, as they put it, "code page 437" or DOS ASCII graphics. Source is written in C and uses SDL. Oh and it actually makes a reference and gives a link to Dwarf Fortress.

http://code.google.com/p/libfake437/

Here's another program that's actually geared specifically for Dwarf Fortress. Might have missed it, but I haven't seen a link to this on the forums yet. Then again I haven't actually searched for it either.

It is. That'll teach me not to be lazy and not do a quick search of the forums. :D

Because my secondary machine has no OGL acceleration, and no plans to have such. OpenGL for 2D graphics with a tile interface is overkill for portability (SDL can handle that just fine.).
I should probably touch on this if anyone else thinks the same. Using OpenGL for 2D might seem like overkill, but since its unlikely Dwarf Fortress will ever be threaded there isn't much point in wasting precious CPU usage on graphics. Much better to off load to OpenGL. Any modern video, even Intel GMA, should be able to handle what OpenGL would be used for.
