Cats; Tribbles?
« on: July 29, 2008, 09:03:11 pm »

I am now thoroughly convinced that cats are born pregnant. I thought I could control my cat population by killing all cats of one sex, and as such haven't had an adult male cat in my fortress for several years, but the kittens just keep coming. Either cats are born pregnant, or they mate with their male offspring the instant they're born. Has anyone else tried this and experienced the same?

Killing the females works MUCH better than killing the males.

Every jumpshot, every rebound and three-pointer, every layup, dunk and free throw.

I considered that, but all my female cats have owners now and I can only imagine the damage a tantruming champion could do.

In all of my forts, all female kittens die as soon as they're born, and in addition I do my best to ensure that I have only one adult (preferably male) cat in my fort, I don't buy another until he dies.

My forts have never suffered from catsphyxiation. Even with several rogue adults, their reproductive output is nothing compared to that of my dog army (puppies remain caged until they're ready to become "processed" at the kennel).

In my current for kittens are jailed within seconds of birth. I've made them a trade good. A cage full of kittens can fetch a tidy sum.

If you want to take care of the cat problem you could try setting their lifespan to 1-2 years.

Remember- It is no coincidence that 'kittens' rhymes with 'mittens'...

I recently had my first successful strange mood. A dabbling migrant "animal caretaker" who I drafted into being a woodcrafter to make practice bolts, posessed the moment he got his first skill up from "Not", and demanding "Trees... Life" and "Skin... Leather".

I didn't have any leather, or any real livestock except for my puppy army that I was building up to guard all my stockpiles with wardogs and provide cover for my outdoorsdwarves.

However, the fortress cat hadn't chosen an owner, despite it being late winter. After a moment of debating, I decided vermin ain't so bad, and I didn't need my new hauling/engraving/soldiering squad kept busy hauling random refuse anyhow.

Fluffy will always be remembered, every time I look at the artifact... crown... I got. :/

If thats the case, your picture is quite misleading...
