Naked Mole Rats
« on: September 15, 2007, 02:52:00 pm »

Given that Naked Mole Rats count for half my deaths in Adventure Mode I thought I'd do some research on them, and found a whole lot of interesting facts.

Among other things, they are unable to regulate their body temperature, having to rely instead on the environment to be the right temperature. Given that they're still mammals, this narrows their range down a bit.

Their skin also lacks a substance necessary for the nerves to transfer pain, meaning they don't feel pain when their skin is damaged.

The most interesting thing is that they live in big colonies with very specialised groups - some are tunnel workers, some are soldiers, etc.

Now, is anyone other than me thinking "mole rat colonies in Dwarf Fortress"? That you can dig into by mistake and have a war on your hands...

Or how about sentient, sapient mole rats... The horror!

I found about them the same way, but those are naked mole dogs in DF (And original Armok).
I only found mentions of naked mole dog on several sites.
It is some sort of hairless dog breed I think.

Eh. I mixed them up. Well, naked mole rats would still be an interesting inclusion, I guess.

Now I'm curious. Where did you read about naked mole dogs, and what did you read?

Naked mole rats are quite harmless, and don't work well as a monster. Naked mole dog is their dog-sized relative, which is much more dangerous. Hotheaded Naked Ice Boreris another related creature, which lives in arctic climate.

Naked mole-rat.  Imagine those teeth scaled x10 for a dog-sized critter.

Here's one place to read up on them- the (U.S.) National Zoo's website:

Perhaps something like this, but with the teeth from the one above:

Nah, more like the size of a labrador or so.
They're size 4, which is 1 size below dogs, and 2 below dwarves.
Their teeth alone probably accounts for 1 unit of the size. :P

Well directly from the game files, they have hunched backs, large claws on their feet, and of course, beaks.

Sounds cute in a oh-my-god-the-creature-it-is-eating-my-face way.
